Swimming starts!

Griffin has help from a swimming instructor and an adult.
We are in swimming groups depending how good we are at swimming. Here are three groups.
We are learning to use torpedo arms before we learn to swim free style.
We are learning to breathe on the side called "bubble breathing"
Waiting for our swim lesson

Science experiments showing Isaac Newton's laws

Isaac Newton's third law is shown here. The wall and gutter board are pushing back with equal force on the balls Alex, Nathan and Jamie are throwing.
This is Isaac Newton's first law: which is; if left alone a moving object carries on moving in a straight line until another force makes it change direction. Here the foam rockets are thrown at the red target, but the force called gravity takes over and pulls the foam rocket to the ground.
Here Isaac Newton's second law which is; when a force is applied to an object it moves. Here Audriana and Randal have applied a force to soft, round balls, they move.

Isaac Newton visits Room 5

On Wednesday, Room 5 had a special guest come and visit them for Inquiry. Our special guest was Sir Isaac Newton, who travelled in time to teach us his Three Laws of Motion.

In this photo, Isaac Newton and Lily are demonstrating the Third Law. The Third Law is 'Objects always push back with equal force'.
In this photo, Isaac with some of Room 5's students are rolling the balls into the goal. This shows the
Second Law, which is 'When a force is applied to an object it moves'. Abby and Nikhil's hands were the force that moved the balls.
Izzy and Eden S are flicking the counters to get closest to the target. They are showing the First Law ' If left alone a moving object carries on moving in a straight line until another force makes it change direction or stop'.

Sir Isaac Newton taught us a lot about his Three Laws of Motion and we got to experiment and see how these work.
Thank you Isaac Newton :)

Immersion- what was it?

This is one of our pictures showing some Room 5 students participating in Immersion. At this station, Lily is engaging in the 'Tissue Box Pull' experiment. For this experiment we needed to drop the sinker off the edge of the table. For the sinker to drop really fast there needed to be no blocks in the tissue box. When Lily placed blocks in the tissue box, it caused the box to move slower, making the sinker hang off the table instead of dropping. We learnt that the force used is called 'Gravity', which pulls everything down to the ground.

Learning how to write instructions

In Room 5 this week we have been learning how to write instructions. Miss Jansen helped us to make strawberry mousse. We needed to have the correct ingredients to make our mousse and when it was made we put it in the fridge to set. It tasted very sweet and was a bit like a jelly.

We have wondered about our brains and discovered  what a pig's brain looks like and feels like.
